Sage Agastya- The first person to invented dry battery or galvanic or voltaic cell
In Hinduism, Vedas are held in high esteem and are regarded as authoritarian repositories of great knowledge. In addition to secrets of our universe, Vedas are rich in useful information on diverse topics like the science of constructing technological devices, military science, gods, music, politics, purpose of man on earth, paths of enlightenment etc. However, due to deceitful translation by foreign missionaries who didn’t even knew ABC of Sanskrit, Vedas are denounced as nothing but superstitious rituals, witchcrafts and black magic. Most of the verses in Vedas are written in riddles and encrypted language which is horribly translated and misinterpreted by western translators to fit their agenda of showing Indians as nomadic Aryan invaders conquering the dwelling indigenous Dravidians of India. After 800 years of slavery and stealing, British rulers left nothing for Indians. Everything of value was either destroyed or stolen away. Even the 6000 year old Kohinoor diamond of lord Krishna was stolen by Queen Elizabeth for her crown. In my Endeavour of showing the rich cultural past of ancient Indians, in this article, we will go through the thousands of year old invention of battery cell by a Vedic sage who was never credited for his invention.
Who first invented galvanic or voltaic cell?
According to scientific books, galvanic cell was one of the foremost techniques of generating electricity, invented by “Alessandro Volta” in the 1800s. This technique is still used for generating electricity in automobiles, power generators and industries. Though Volta may be the first person of our generation to invent battery cell (galvanic cell), he was certainly not the first person to do so. According to Agastya Samhita, written at least thousands of years ago, there is a mention of a process of constructing battery cell similar to the one used by Volta.
Sage agatsya-The first person on earth to invent galvanic cell
“Agastya Samhita” was written by sage agatsya. Sage agatsya was an enlightened sage, who in addition to battery cell, is also credited with many other discoveries like kites, air balloons, airplanes, Indian medicinal system (Ayurveda), astrology, martial arts (Kalaripayattu) etc. Sage Agastya is the founder of Tamil language and is therefore, regarded as the father of Tamil literature etc.
It is said that Lord Shiva taught Tamil to sage agatsya which was later propounded by sage agatsya to the general masses. Not to mention that after sanskrit, Tamil is the oldest language in the world. Sage Agastya is said to be one of the chiranjeevi (immortal till end of Dwapar yuga) and is mentioned in both Ramayana and Mahabharata. Other famous chiranjeevi’s are Lord hanuman, Parshuram(fifth avatar of lord Vishnu) and Aswatthama(dronacharya son cursed by lord krishna). There are more than 96 books on sage agatsya in Tamil language.
How the research works of sage agatsya was found and decoded?
Few pages of Agatsya samhita was accidently found by an engineer named “Rao Saheb Krishnaji Vajhe” and “Damodar Tryambak Joshi” while they were searching for scriptures related to science. These pages were handed over to Dr. M.C.Sahastrabuddhe, head of the Sanskrit Department in Nagpur. He felt that the description is similar to Daniel cell. However lacking knowledge on science, Sahastrabuddhe handed over the translated verses to P.P. Hole, who investigated the verses and did research along with subordinates to conclude that the description matches with the construction process of a galvanic cell.
Ancient Indians knew about oxygen and hydrogen
Dr. varam. R. kokatnur, an Indian born American chemist seized this manuscript where there was a mention of hydrogen and oxygen in connection with construction of air balloon. Obviously, sage agatsya didn’t use modern scientific names for oxygen and hydrogen; instead he used more meaningful names like “Upfaced” for hydrogen because of its lightness and “Essential to life” for oxygen. Below is the exact translation
When the “upfaced” is filled in the air proof bag and the bag is tied at the head of a vehicle, the “upfaced” due to its lightness carries the vehicle in the sky.
Verse: (वायुबन्धकवस्त्रेणनिबद्धो यानमस्तके उदनःस्वलघुत्वे बिभर्त्याकाशयानकम्.)
Transliteration: VayubandhakvastrenNibaddho Yanmastake UdanahSwalaghutve
Bibhartyakashayanakam.
Translation:
If hydrogen is contained in an air tight cloth, it can be used in aerodynamics, i.e. it will fly in air. (Today’s Hydrogen Balloon)
The process of air proofing a balloon bag is described as follows:-
Dip a silk bag in the bark of trees which produces milky juice (Rubber). Then dry it and dip it in the juice of another tree that produces tannin. Dry it again and then coat it initially with wax and then with some mixture of lime and sugar.
Oxygen and hydrogen has been known to ancient Indians since time immemorial. Brahmins and dwija(twice born) have been chanting the following verse everyday(where these two gases are mentioned) in their daily prayers during meal time.
“I reside in the animal body in the form of digestive fire (animal heat and with the aid of Prana and Apana, digest the four kinds of foods”
Process of Electroplating by Maharshi Agastya in Agastya Sanhita:
Following equipments were used by sage agatsya to generate electricity by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen.
1. One earthen pot
2.Copper plate
3.Copper sulphate
4.Wet saw dust
5.Zinc amalgam
Below is the Sanskrit verse that describes the process to generate electricity:-
Verse: संस्था प्ये मृन्मये पत्रे "तम्रपात्र्न" सुसांकरतम
तेय्डाछ्च शिखी ग्रिवेनड्रारभिही कस्थापन्सुभिही
दस्तलोष्तो निधताव्याहा पारडच्छादितस्ताटाहा
संयोगात जयते तेजो मित्रावरून संद्यिटम
संस्था प्ये (Take ) मृन्मये (soil) पत्रे ( patra= container) "तम्रपात्र्न" ( cleaned copper plate) सुसांकरतम
च्छाड्येत ( covere with ) शिखी ( Morchud = Copper sulphate)ग्रिवेनड्रारभिही कस्थाप
Transliteration:“Sansthapya MrinmayaPatre Tamrapatram Susanskritam
Chhadye chhikhi grivenChardrarbhih Kashthpamsubhih.
Dastaloshto Nidhatavyah Pardachhaditastah
Sanyogaj jayte Tejo Mitravarunsangyitam”
Translation: Insert a copper plate in an earthenware vessel and cover it first by copper sulfate and then moist sawdust. Then put zinc sheet amalgamated by mercury on top of an energy known by the twin name of Mitra-Varuna. Current produced will split the water into Pranavayu and Udanavayu. Combination of one hundred such vessels would produce a very strong electrical force.
In above verse, Mitra is cathode ,Varuna is anode , Pranavayu is oxygen, Udanavayu is hydrogen, Ghritachi is earthen ceramic beaker, ShataKumbh is 100 cells in series to convert chemical energy to electrical energy, Apsara is water tight vessel. Due to the chemical reaction, +ve and -ve charge is created .The water is decomposed into oxygen and hydrogen".
Verse: (अणेन जलभगोस्ती प्रणोदनेशू वायूषू
एवं शतना कुंभना संयोगहा कार्यक्ृटसमृताहा)
Transliteration: AnenJalbhangostiPranoDaneshu VayushuEvamShatanam
Kumbhanamsanyogkaryakritsmritah.
Translation:
If we use the power of 100 earthen pots on water, then water will change its form into life-giving oxygen and floating hydrogen.
When a cell was created according to the technique mentioned in “agatsya samhita”, it was observed to produce 1.4V of electricity and short circuit current as 23 mA. Some researchers’ claims that the electric battery was used in Vedic era to create medical Ozone from electrolysis of water charged with fresh Tulsi or Basil leaves.
The real example of this ancient methodology of generating electricity was observed by Reverned S. Mateer of the London Protestant Mission. He saw a great lamp lit over one hundred and twenty years ago in the temple of Trivandrum, Travancore.
Six Vedic way of generating electricity
As per the research done by modern scientists, there are only two kinds of electricity.
1) Alternating Current (AC)
2) Direct current(DC)
Ancient Vedic technologists classified generation of electricity in six ways, some of which is still unknown today.
Saudamini-that produced by friction from gems or glass,
Hradini-that obtained from storage cells,
Ashani-the one emanating from a magnetic rod.
Shatakoti alias Shatakumbhi-that produced from a battery of hundreds of cells,
Vidyut-produced from clouds or steam,
Tadit-the one produced by friction from leather or silk,
Flow of electricity in human body
Do you know that our body also generates electrical energy and the work and activities we do is enabled by electric energy? As our cells are electric, whole human body is electric. Everything we do is governed by electric energy flowing through the body. Messages conducted via electrical signals controls the rhythm of your heartbeat and movement of blood across your body.
For Ex: While eating, Nervous system sends signals from the brain to our hands. It behaves like digital signals carrying messages in form of 0’s and 1 ‘s from point A to point B except that in our body, electrons doesn’t flow through wire but jumps from one cell to another, allowing for nearly instantaneous communication until it reaches its destination.
When the cell is in a poor state and unable to generate electricity, it fails in performing generic functions like getting rid of parasites, bacteria, dangerous toxins etc.

How cell generates electricity?
Almost all of our cells generate electricity. Energy created by body is proportional to our daily intake of elements. All the elements we intake daily like oxygen, potassium, calcium, sodium, magnesium etc. have some electrical charge- .i.e. they have a specific number of electrons and protons. How the various molecules react with each other determines the amount of energy created inside the body. Larger molecules of our food are broken down into smaller molecules by our digestive system which is then used by cells to perform their daily activities. This process is called cellular respiration.

Why should we ground our feet on mother earth?
Mother Earth carries tremendous amount of negative charge. It’s always rich in electrons and serves as a powerful supplier of antioxidant and free-radical-busting electrons. When connected to earth via your feet, there is a constant flow of energy between your body and mother earth. Through the soles of your feet, your body absorbs large amount of electrons to charge up your body. This process known as ‘earthing’ or ‘grounding’ keeps your body at the same negatively charged electrical potential as mother earth. Grounding is the best known antioxidants that is said to reduce inflammation, improve sleep, relieve pain and enhance overall wellbeing of the body. Since inflammation is the cause of many heart diseases, grounding protects your heart by keeping the blood thin through negatively infused ions flowing through the soles of the feet. Wearing shoes in your home shields you from the beneficial influx of electrons from mother earth. It is therefore advisable to stay barefoot in home well-connected to mother earth rather than staying in buildings and skyscrapers with fancy interiors.

How the body generates static electricity?
Static electricity is generated by any activity that creates friction. On friction of two non conductors, electrons are passed from one object to the other. For Ex. Rubbing hands on something or dragging your feet on carpet. Rate of electron transfer depends upon proximity of another conductor and humidity of air(electricity discharges less through dry air). Static electricity generally increases in environments of low humidity like air-conditioned rooms, insulated rooms or dry areas and accumulates in regions where the charge cannot escape. To avoid shock of static electricity, Ground yourself before touching any sensitive equipment and walk barefoot or cover shoes with aluminum foil.
Summary:
From above post, it is very clear that electricity and its properties were fully understood by Vedic sages. Apparently, Vedic sages knew more properties of electricity than it is known to us today. Quite obviously, it was used in day to day technological applications. Not until recently, modern scientists discovered the potential use of electricity in military equipments. Thus, above Post clearly demonstrate the highly technological advancement and full utilization of Electricity by Vedic scientists in innumerable productive applications.
